Bangor

Bangor is a large suburb on the western side of the Sutherland Shire. There are approximately 5,600 residents living in Bangor, enjoying the bush surroundings and the open space. The name Bangor was chosen back in 1895 by an original farmer in the area Owen Jones, who was born in Bangor, Wales.  The residential development of this suburb began in the 1970’s.

Currently Bangor has not had any large high rise developments. The streets are quiet and the blocks are quite large, which makes it a hit with young families looking for backyard space. The addition of the Bangor Bypass road also means there’s less traffic flowing through on a regular basis.

While it is mostly a residential suburb, there is a small, busy shopping centre in a central location in the suburb. It has been recently renovated, and in it you will find a post office, chemist, newsagency, bakery, butcher, cafe and butcher.  Bangor Tavern is right next to the shopping centre. It is a traditional local pub, with a large (and dog friendly!) beer garden. There’s a large screen to watch all the big sporting events, and an affordable classic pub menu to enjoy

For sports fans there are local competitions played on Bangor’s two large ovals, Akuna Oval and Billa Oval. Bangor Brumbies is the local soccer club. There is a Scout Club and Hall, where weekly meetings are held. This is suitable for both boys and girls aged 6 – 25.

There are a number of options for schools in Bangor. Bangor Public School is the public primary school. Holy Family Catholic College is a private primary school, with Aquanis Catholic College the connected private school for high schoolers. Inaburra School is another private school, with classes from kindergarten through to year 12.

If you’re looking for public transport, the closest train station is Sutherland on the Illawarra / Cronulla line. A bus service also runs through Bangor, serving local suburbs in the Sutherland Shire and Bankstown / Canterbury areas too.

Bangor is home to Inaburra School, one of the most highly regarded school in the Sutherland Shire. It is where former Prime Minister Scott Morrison sends his daughters.
