Como is a small suburb on the southern side of the Georges River, on the northwest side of the Sutherland Shire. Come is home to approximately 4,000 residents and they are mostly families with young children. Como is picturesque, surrounded by bushland and water. Residents and visitors enjoy bushwalking, picnics, boating, and kayaking in the area. There are many parks and open spaces to explore, some with a unique history. We recommend starting at Henry Lawson Reserve with the Como Heritage and Environment Trail, a 4.2km easy walk through the local streets and bushland in Como. It will take you through the Como Pleasure Grounds, Rail Bridge and Station, Como Hotel, and Scylla Bay Oval and you can learn more about the local history. In the 1800’s Como and its surrounding suburbs of Oyster Bay, Kareela, Janalli, and Illawong were all known as Woronora.

Como was re-named by a local landowner James Frederick Murphy, who thought the area resembled Lake Como in Italy. The Como Hotel was originally built in the late 1800’s for railway workers. In 1996 there was a kitchen fire that burnt the hotel to the ground. In 2001 the Como Hotel was rebuilt using the original brickwork. It retains the original 1870’s feel in its architecture and is a beautiful place to enjoy a meal and drink.nOne of Australia’s most famous poets, Henry Lawson, lived in Como for a few years. It is said he often frequented the original Como Hotel to write or even perform in exchange for a drink. You can find the remaining foundations of the house Henry Lawson rented in Paruna Reserve.

Como is a mostly residential suburb, but there is a small set of shops centrally located on Wolger Street. Here you will find a corner store, cafe, general practitioner, veterinarian, chemist, and hairdresser. There are two primary schools in the area, educating students from kindergarten to year 6; Como Public School and Como West Public School. For those interested in sports, there are a few options to choose from in Como. There are tennis courts, the Como Jannali Junior Rugby League Club, and the St George Rowing Club. Como Marina is a great spot to stop in for a coffee before you hire a boat for the day. If you have your own boat, you can utilise the Scylla Bay Boat Ramp and Wharf. Como does sit on the Illawarra / Cronulla line, though it is one of the stations that doesn’t seem to be stopped at as frequently as others. There is also a local bus service that transports passengers through to surrounding suburbs.
